The research interests of the quantum optics group are experimental quantum information, the physics and applications of of atom-light interaction, quantum metrology and non-linear optics. We are located in the Department of Quantum Science, which is a part of the Research School of Physics and Engineering.
Our group forms a part of the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communications Technology. This ARC Centre of Excellence is based and the University of New South Wales and has nodes at the University of Queensland, University of Melbourne, Griffith Univeristy, UNSW@ADFA as well as the ANU.
In addition to our journal publicatiosn found above we also have a list of our group's theseis.
Gradient echo memory (GEM) is a coherent light storage technique based on photon echoes. Our GEM experiment is based on a 3-level system in hot rubidium vapour.
Random numbers are generated in real-time in our lab by measuring the quantum fluctuations of the vacuum. These are made available on the internet in real time.
Quantum cryptography enables the secure transmission of a random binary key which allows unconditionally secure encryption of data.
By levitating a mirror on 3 optical resonators we hope to be able to measure changes in the gravitational force, investigate quantum opto-mechanical effects and perhaps allow tests of quantum gravity theories.
