Project details

High performance toroidal magnetic confinement plasma experiments such as the next step fusion experiment ITER will have up to 16MA of current in the plasma (roughly equivalent to 300 lightning bolts). Such devices also have strong magnetic fields: in ITER the toroidal field strngth is 5T.  This ensuing Lorenz force during a plasma disruption can be immense.

In this project we will examine the forces generated in superconductoring magnetics, and scope the forces generated during a disruption.
