This year the ANU Giving Day will raise funds to help eradicate Konzo. Konzo is a neurological disease that causes irreversible paralysis of the legs, often in children and young women. It's caused by malnutrition and consumption of high levels of a cyanide compound found in cassava - a common staple food in tropical Africa.
ANU Emeritus Fellow Dr Howard Bradbury AM has spent 26 years researching and working with African communities to find a solution – using the 'wetting method'. Dr Bradbury's discovery is a simple solution to a devastating problem. Funds raised will enable ANU to work with local health practitioners to support education programs teaching villages how to prevent new outbreaks occurring.
