Final PhD Seminar

Manipulating electromagnetic fields with advanced metamaterials

Mr Aleksei Slobozhaniuk
PhD student, Nonlinear Physics Center

Discovery and further development of novel materials regularly boost the standards of living through new technological progress and cutting-edge research. The field of material science produced many new concepts in the past twenty years. One of the very recent and promising discoveries is related to the field of artificially designed materials – metamaterials. These artificial materials offer a unique platform and great flexibility for tailoring electromagnetic waves, including manipulation of light.

In this final seminar, I will present my experimental study of the electromagnetic-field manipulation and control with different types of artificial materials. More specifically, I will demonstrate how to employ metamaterials either for the study of new physics related to electromagnetic topological insulators or to improve the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by incorporating metasurfaces in the existing MRI devices.
