Simulating Fast Fission

We apply the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) technique to explore some aspects of fission dynamics. While TDHF is not able to describe spontaneous fission, it can shed light on the fast processes that occur in induced fission as the nascent fragments attempt to come in to existence and the Coulomb repulsion and the nuclear forces compete and combine to explore the fission landscape in a way free from any imposed shape constraint aside from a starting point. We find that this fast dynamics does not follow that adiabatic path that comes from constrained-shape calculations of potential energy surfaces, and that the method is able to provide both some qualitatively and quantitatively good results in the sample case of 240Pu.
