Departmental Seminar

Recent activities in the Experimental Mechanics Laboratory

Dr Nicolas Francois
Research Fellow, Department of Materials Physics, ANU

The recently formed laboratory of experimental mechanics carries out cross-disciplinary research activities on the mechanics of geomaterials, structured materials and fluids. Our research lies at the intersection of key thematics in the department of Materials Physics, the CT-lab and the M3D Training Centre. The group exploits advanced mechanical testing instruments coupled with micro-computed tomography imaging to investigate various questions of fundamental physics with direct industrial or environmental applications. I will describe several model experiments to illustrate our activities tackling some problems in textile mechanics, wood-based composites and mineral processing [1,2].
