Departmental Seminar

Nanoscale Classical and Quantum Light Sources

Ms Anastasiia Zalognia
Australian National University

The functionality of nanoscale light sources can be enhanced using building blocks smaller than the wavelength of the light. The recent developments of high-index dielectric nanoparticles suggest a versatile mechanism of light localisation via resonances that may generate magnetic responses through a displacement current contribution. In addition, the interference of electric and magnetic resonances and the resonant enhancement of the magnetic field in dielectric nanoparticles allow new functionalities with simple geometries, for example the enhancement of the emission rate or nonlinear effects.

In my mid-term review seminar I will present results on classical light sources based on dielectric metasurfaces that include the generation of high-harmonics in the mid-IR region, and phase and polarisation control of emission from doped nanocrystals and 2D materials. I will also discuss quantum light sources based on the enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate of NV centres in diamond using high-index dielectric nanostructures. Strongly-enhanced emission and efficient optical frequency conversion of both dielectric quantum and classical light sources offer unique potential for electro-optical devices.
