Public Lecture

Imagining Australia with 100% renewable energy: how do we get there?

Energy experts are attending a workshop at the Australian National University to consider 100% renewable energy, exports and emissions reductions over 18 - 19 February 2020. Several workshop delegates will present an overview of the renewables revolution at this public lecture.

Australia has recently installed PV and wind at a rate above 5 GW per year (200 Watts per person per year), which is 4 times faster per capita than the EU, China, USA or Japan. Decarbonising the electricity grid is an important first step to zero emissions – because the clean electricity can power transport, industry, and even the chemical industry.

Demand for our exports will change as other countries decarbonise. Australia has good wind and solar resources by international standards – but is it feasible to export large amounts of solar and wind energy?

What could the future hold – and what needs to change to get us there?

A series of talks will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Drinks and finger food will be served from 5.30pm with the event beginning at 6.00pm.

This lecture is co-hosted by ANU 100% Renewable Energy research group; ANU Energy Change Institute; UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering; the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics; and the Energy Transition Hub.
