2019 ACT Science Experience

The ACT Science Experience is a 3 day program of science and engineering based activities for Year 9/10 students. For the last two years this program has been run out of RSPhys, specifically in Nuclear Physics by Greg Lane and AJ Mitchell, ably helped by Petra Rickman. A number of students who attended the Science Experience over the last two decades have since come back to study physics at the ANU. As well as activities at Geoscience Australia, Engineering, RSBS and elsewhere, this year the

36 students from ACT/NSW/QLD/VIC enjoyed visits to the Nuclear, X-ray CT, Positron, Laser and Plasma Labs, as well as presentations from our own Hans Bachor ("How big is a photon" with Patrick Helean from Questacon), Phil Dooley (The elements in song!), Rose Ahlefeldt (public lecture on "Spectroscopy: from rainbows to quantum computers") and Matt Gerathy (liquid nitrogen icecream). Thanks also go to those who helped with the lab visits, including Lindsey Bignell, Matt Sellars, Matt Berrington, Josh Machacek, Levi Beeching, Tim Senden and Cormac Corr.

Apologies to any contributors who have been missed.

Greg Lane
