Nominations are now open for the 2018 ACT Scientist of the Year Award

The ACT Scientist of the Year Award seeks to recognise the achievements of an emerging scientist and celebrates excellence in research and innovation in the ACT.

Nominations are invited from individual scientists working in basic or applied research and science, in all fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Nominees must have finished their PhD within the last 10 years, and be in the ACT conducting research.

Nominating for the Award is easy. Applicants need to respond to three selection criteria, and provide two referee reports.

The recipient will receive a $30,000 (ex GST) prize which can be used at their discretion. They will become a science ambassador for the ACT by encouraging young people to consider a career in science and promoting the ACT as a centre of excellence in scientific research and innovation.

2017 ACT Scientist of the Year, Dr Kai Xun Chan, spent his time as ACT Scientist of the Year communicating his research and passion for science through a wide range of events.

“Receiving the award opened so many doors for me, not just in science, but also in getting an increased appreciation for connecting with the community, particularly through schools. I have a better understanding of the challenges teachers’ face in inspiring students to pursue a career in science and how early career scientists, like myself, can support them and encourage more students into a career in STEM.”

Dr Chan, as an early career scientist, noted that “winning this award also serves as an inspiration to young scientists to know that there are steps in our careers where we can be recognised early on for the kind of work we do. And be celebrated for the passion and hard work we put into addressing the issues we’re curious about.”

If you are eligible to apply, or know someone who is, consider making a nomination. For more information, including selection criteria, visit act.gov.au/scientistofyear.

Nominations close Monday 18 June 2018.
