Sustainable Stand Up - Comedy Course

Published in the Research School of Physics Event Horizon
Vol48 Issue13 3–7 April 2023

This course is for absolute comedy beginners. It combines the presence and lateral thinking skills of improvisation, as well as craft of making every word count of stand up comedy. This course has been run over 50 times in the world, including four times in Canberra. It has been part of National Science Week twice.

Participants have included prominent climate scientists, humanitarian workers, Extinction Rebellion activists, corporate social responsibility officers, science communicators, and multiple Masters and PhD students researching ways to solve different environmental and social issues.

Internal company courses have been run by the leadership academy of a global social development organisation in Germany, and with EIT InnoEnergy.

The requirement of participants is a desire and openness to use a compassionate form of humour to get our ideas across.

THE TRAINERS

BELINA RAFFY (she/her) is a giggly US-French citizen based in Berlin, Germany. She works with activists, agronomists, climate scientists, filmmakers, sustainability professionals, humanitarian workers, and others to do three things: 1) improvise more effectively for sustainable innovation, 2) align organisations with nature, and 3) learn a loving form of stand up comedy to help people illuminate important issues in ways audiences want to reflect upon and can remember years later.

Belina giggles a lot because she loves what she does.
