Studying the scattering properties of optical nanostructures is a field of research with a long standing tradition yet there still emerge new aspects. In this talk, I present new and exact expressions to evaluate the multipole moments from a given current distribution. These expressions do not provide more insights when compared to standard textbook expressions, but their evaluation is much easier. Most importantly, these new expressions shed light on the emergence of toroidal multipole moments in a multipole expansion.
