Enabling III-V Semiconductor Photoelectrodes for Stand-Alone Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Developing high performance photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting cells is crucial in ensuring a cost-sustainable production of ‘green’ hydrogen. Utilizing III-V semiconductors as substrates is a key to this strategy, but efforts are required to enable them for water splitting reactions and chemically passivate these materials in highly corrosive electrolytes. This talk will mainly describe the research conducted to develop high performance, earth-abundant multimetallic catalysts that also serves as a chemical protection layer to these substrates. These catalysts are substrate agnostic and possess regenerative capabilities, while simultaneously delivering high performance and stability for PEC and industrial water splitting applications. This talk will also briefly cover the work done to fabricate nanostructured III-V semiconductors in an effort to develop decoupled photoelectrodes using these earth-abundant cocatalysts.
