meriSTEM ‘Physics and Flipping’ workshop - update

On 24 October 2019, meriSTEM facilitated a professional learning afternoon for 29 ACT secondary science teachers titled ‘Physics and Flipping’.

First, Dr Vaishali Adya from The ANU Centre for Gravitational Physics and OzGrav unpacked the science of detecting gravitational waves from black holes and showcased how science truly is a 'Human Endeavour'. She shared how local research is contributing and how an international science project actually operates.

We then dove headfirst into education pedagogy regarding 'flipped classroom' models. We explored tools for evaluating teacher's own practice and brainstormed solutions to frequently confronted issues about implementing flipping and meriSTEM in schools.

The ideas generated by the session participants will be added to our 2020 meriSTEM Teacher Guide to assist secondary teachers across Australia.

Recordings from this session will also be shared with secondary teachers and the ANU community early next year, thanks to ANU iLEAP.

The meriSTEM team (Professor Joe Hope, Jay Ridgewell and Tim Friel) would like to extend their thanks to Dr Vaishali Adya for sharing her expertise, Rafael Florez from ANU iLEAP for recording the session, and the ACT Education Directorate for hosting us at the Hedley Beare Centre for Teaching and Learning in Stirling, ACT.
