Westpac STEM PhD Program

Westpac have announced a new Program for PhD students in STEM-related disciplines. The program supports students with employment while completing their research as follows:

Four year fixed-term employment contract at Westpac Group
Employment is 0.6 Full Time Equivalent in Sydney (there is the possibility to negotiate flexibility around the arrangement of the 0.6 FTE)
Full time equivalent salary of $100,000 p.a. plus superannuation and benefits. For a three day part-time position, this equates to an annual base salary of $60,000 p.a.
Employment commencement date: 6 February 2017
Employment end date: 5 February 2021
Program participants will complete two, 24 month rotations in two different Westpac Group Business Units, with the second rotation commencing in February 2019.

their most recent CV
a list of research related publications (including peer reviewed conference or journal publications, Hons and Masters theses, research reports),
a short summary (200 words) of their proposed research, and
a letter of support from their supervisor.

Funded Hardiman PhD Scholarships
NUI Galway Hardiman Scholarships will provide a stipend of €16,000 per annum plus your fees will be paid for four years. Australia-India Strategic Research Fund Priorities

The programme supports a small number of projects to assist Australian researchers to collaborate with Indian research partners on projects with a strategic focus and leading-edge scientific research and technology in priority areas.

The Australian National University may only submit one Project application per round as lead organisation, but may also be a partner in Other Project applications in that same AISRF round. To facilitate a potential ranking process, please notify rspe.rm@anu.edu.au of any Expressions of Interest (EOIS) applications by COB Tuesday 6 September 2016.

ANU Publications Subsidy Fund round 2, 2016

This fund can provide ANU authors with financial assistance for the commercial publication of the results of academic research of staff members or students of the University that are unable (or unlikely to be able) to be published by an independent commercial publisher without financial assistance

Lift-off fellowships
Australian Mathematical Society, AU

These jump start the careers of young mathematicians by supporting them after the submission of their PhD thesis. Fellowships are worth up to AUD 5,000 each and may cover living expense, the costs associated with attending conferences, travel and visits of collaborators.

Women in mathematics special interest group Cheryl E Praeger travel awards
Australian Mathematical Society, AU

These support Australian female mathematicians in attending conferences or to visit collaborators. The awards are worth up to AU$1,000 for a domestic trip and up to AU$3,000 for an international trip.

Carl Wagner memorial award
Electrochemical Society, US

The objective of the award is to recognise mid-career achievement and excellence in research in areas of interest of the society and significant contributions in the teaching or guidance of students or colleagues in education, industry or government.

Heat transfer memorial award
American Society of Mechanical Engineers, US

This recognises individuals who have made contributions to the field of heat transfer through teaching, research, practice and design, or a combination of such activities. Each award includes USD 1,000.

Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship Programme

This programme encourages women’s participation in STEM education and careers and in the broader innovation ecosystem focusing on entrepreneurial activities and careers. Grants from $5,000 - $250,000 per project will be provided for a maximum of 2 years.

Please note the Australian National University is limited to 1 applicant. CROs will assist with applications and ensure that the eligibility requirements are met. Ensure RSD are aware of any potential applications by Friday, 16 September as there may be need for a ranking process. The appropriate documentation should be submitted as one PDF.

This supports research in nuclear medicine in Australia and New Zealand. The grant is worth up to AU$20,000 for a duration of approximately one year.

Global Innovation Linkages (GIL) programme Launched
Department of Industry, Innovation and Science

This programme was launched on 8^th Aug by the minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, the Hon Greg Hunt MP. It will assist Australian business and researchers to collaborate with global partners on projects with a strategic focus on leading-edge research and development. Grants of up to AU$1 million per project will provided over a maximum of four years. Please register for Information sessions held between 22 Aug – 12 Sep 2016. Places are limited.

Australia–India Early- and Mid-Career Fellowships for 2017–18
Australian Academy of Science

The Australian Academy of Science invites Australian early- and mid-career researchers to apply for the Australia–India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) Early- and Mid-Career Researcher (EMCR) Fellowships 2017–18. The EMCR Fellowships provide support for Australian researchers to travel to India and work with leading researchers at major Indian science and technology organisations for a period of between 3 and 9 months.

Researcher mobility grants
Royal Society of Chemistry, GB

These enable PhD and early-career researchers to undertake short- to mid-term scientific visits to organisations overseas or in the UK. Grants vary in size depending on the length and location of visits, but are worth up to £7,500 each for visits of up to two years.

This recognises outstanding scientific achievements made by researchers, innovators and inventors from all over the world.

Joint transnational call on sensing technologies
ERA-Net PhotonicSensing, EU

This aims to contribute to the fast development and implementation of photonics based sensing technologies. Funding may range from €500,000 to €4 million per project over 24 to 36 months.

Society in science – Branco Weiss fellowshipsSwiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, CH

These enable young postdoctoral researchers to work on a research topic of choice in science, engineering and social sciences. Fellowships include a grant worth CHF100,000 per year for up to five years and the opportunity to work at any academic institution of the fellow’s choice.

Experiment – in search of bold research ideas
VolkswagenStiftung – Volkswagen Foundation, DE

This initiative aims to support new research concepts in science, engineering, behavioural and life sciences, disregarding the project risk and perhaps the vagueness of a successful outcome. Approximately 15 exploratory projects will be granted per year, worth €100,000 each for a period of 18 months.

Horizon prize for CO2 reuse
Horizon 2020: Societal Challenges, EU

This rewards innovative products utilising CO2 that could significantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2 when deployed at commercial scale. The prize is worth €1.5 million.
