The School Communicator – Dr Phil Dooley

Dr Phil Dooley is a science writer, presenter, videomaker and trainer, who helps scientists get their research out to their audience in the most effective way.

Phil has a PhD in laser physics and is a former national office holder for Australian Science Communicators. He’s worked for ANU Research School of Physics, in ANU media office, at University of Sydney running outreach for Physics School and in digital comms for JET, the world’s largest fusion energy experiment. He is a qualified trainer (Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment).

Alongside ANU work he works as a freelance science communicator. He has written for – among others – Cosmos Magazine, New Scientist, and Nature Custom Publishing. His articles were selected for the Anthology of Best Australian Science Writing in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Over his two-decade career as a science communicator he has worked on YouTube videos that got hundreds of thousands of hits, tweets that saw millions of impressions, press releases that went international, school workshops for thousands of students and science pub nights that had crowds cheering for more.

He also runs Science Pub nights in five cities across a range of subjects (list of partners below). His creative approaches to science communication have included covers of Beatles songs, rap, poems, kitchen videos, bedtime stories, plays, improv theatre, stand up comedy and lewd limericks (see philuponscience.com.au for more).
