A Stellarator Hybrid Fusion-Fission Reactor
A viable fusion-fission hybrid reactor is achievable with present-day plasma fusion technology. The fusion-fission hybrid consists of a fusion neutron source and a powerful sub-critical fast fission reactor core. It is aimed for transmutation of spent nuclear fuel and safe fission energy production. In this design, the fusion part is a stellarator-type hybrid system with an embedded magnetic mirror. The stellarator confines deuterium plasma with moderate temperature, 1-2 keV. In the magnetic mirror, a hot component of sloshing tritium ions is trapped. There the fusion neutrons are generated to control the chain fission reaction inside the nuclear mantle. The distinguishing feature of the proposal is that a proof-of-principle machine could be made sufficiently compact.
The talk will cover the design of stellarator-mirror hybrid machine, the existence of magnetic surfaces there, the problem of fast ion generation and confinement, the design of the nuclear mantle and results of the neutron calculations.
