Professor Anthony Burkitt
Director, Bionic Vision Australia

The story of the bionic eye has captured the imagination of people all over the world. Following the announcement of Australia's first successful bionic eye implants last year, testing of an early prototype device continues with three patients in Melbourne. In this seminar an overview of the Bionic Vision Australia research program will be presented, looking at the potential benefits for patients and how this technology will develop into the future, with a focus upon the scientific challenges that will need to be overcome to make this clinically and commercially successful.

Professor Anthony Burkitt is Director of Bionic Vision Australia and holds the Chair in Bio-Signals and Bio-Systems in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Professor Burkitt also leads the team developing electrical stimulation strategies for the High-Acuity retinal implant. For over a decade previously, Professor Burkitt has worked in a number of areas of medical bionics, including cochlear-implant speech processing, computational auditory neuroscience and epilepsy. Professor Burkitt was previously the Deputy Director of the Bionic Ear Institute and held research positions at the ANU and Universities in Britain and Germany. He did his undergraduate studies in Physics at ANU and his PhD in Theoretical Physics at Edinburgh University.
