Departmental Seminar

The quest for physics beyond the Standard Model: facts, fancies and opinions”

Professor Raymond Volkas
Chief Investigator at Dark Matter Centre:ARC Centre of Excellence forDark Matter Particle Physics,
University of Melbourne

Abstract:
We know that physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) exists, but the question is how to best proceed to determine its particle nature.
I will provide a historical perspective, covering the last few decades, on how the dominant theoretical speculations and prejudices about BSM fared against experimental searches. I will draw what I think are important lessons from this experience. That means I will be opinionated, and thus hopefully stimulating! I’ll end with a brief overview of the current prospects for uncovering some BSM physics.

Biography:
Ray Volkas is a theoretical particle physicist who constructs theories that extend Standard Model of particle physics and analyses their phenomenological, cosmological and astrophysical implications. Motivations for the work include mysteries such as the origin of neutrino masses, the particle nature of dark matter, and the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. He is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at the University of Melbourne and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
