The important journal Physical Review E is currently choosing 25 'milestone' articles, including an article for each calendar year from 1993 through 2017, spanning all major subject areas. A paper by Nail Akhmediev, Adrian Ankiewicz and J. M. Soto-Crespo has been chosen as the most significant contribution of the year 2009. This paper, 'Rogue waves and rational solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation', introduces higher order rogue waves, written using polynomials. This paper has been widely cited and was experimentally verified. Indeed, it has opened up a broad area of research, as this topic subsequently became very popular.
