inSTEM is a networking and career development conference for people from marginalised or underrepresented groups in STEM, and their allies. It is an initiative of the ARC Centres of Excellence. Networking is a key strategy for career progression, yet numerous studies have shown that women’s networks are less powerful than men’s and that women seem to be less equipped to leverage the networks they do have, when it comes to their career¹. Further research has found that this is not an issue specific to women but is indicative of the experiences of marginalised groups in general².

inSTEM will offer attendees a safe space where they can meet, make connections, and build relationships with other researchers and research scholars. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from leading experts on topics and strategies that support career development and progression. We will also discuss how to create change that improves access, supports retention, and champions success in STEM for individuals form marginalised or underrepresented groups.

Developed with early-to-mid-career researchers in mind, inSTEM is a three-day conference that will be held both virtually and in person between the 19th and 21st of September 2023.

Speakers

Associate Professor Alice Motion (They/She)
Deputy Director, Sydney Nano Institute & Founder, Breaking Good

Associate Professor Alice Motion is a chemist and the Deputy Director of the
Sydney Nano Institute at The University of Sydney. Alice is recognised as a
leading international science communicator and their research has focused
on open science and Science Communication, Outreach, Participation
and Education (SCOPE). Finding ways to connect people with science
and to make research more accessible is the overarching theme of Alice’s interdisciplinary research.

Alice is the founder of the Breaking Good project – a citizen science project
that aims to empower high school and undergraduate students to be active
researchers in projects that will improve human health.

In 2015, Alice was named as one of ABC RN and UNSW’s Top 5 Under 40 in
recognition of their passion for sharing science stories. Alice was the RACI
Nyholm Lecturer for 2017/18 and a finalist in the 2017 American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Early Career Award for Public
Engagement with Science. Alice is the co-host of the ABC Science podcast,
Dear Science, and was the host of a weekly science slot on FBi Radio’s
breakfast show from 2015-2021.

Dr Shari Walsh (She/Her)
Psychologist and career practitioner

Dr Shari Walsh is an experienced psychologist and career development
practitioner who has worked within the academic, organisational and private
practice sectors. Shari has extensive experience working with HDR candidates,
early career researchers, supervisors and academics to build and maintain
positive psychological wellbeing, communicate effectively, and develop
career confidence during their research roles and beyond. Feedback from

Shari’s workshops and webinars indicate that attendees highly value her
warm and engaging style, her understanding and insight of issues impacting
researchers, her practical approach, and the skills and strategies she offers to
facilitate optimal functioning.

Shari has a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and Doctor of Philosophy
(Psychology) from QUT. She is registered with the Psychology Board
of Australia and a professional member of the Australian Association of
Psychologists Inc and the National Graduate Careers Advisory Services.
