Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is with enormous pleasure to welcome Prof Ben Buchler (QST) into the role of Associate Director for Education. Everyone who knows Ben will understand the passion and care he brings to his teaching. Please congratulate Ben when you see him next. Equally, I remain truly grateful to the commitment, innovation and leadership Prof Joe Hope has demonstrated over the past seven years as AD(E). It has been wonderful working with him and I’d like to recognise his contribution with a School morning tea in the next few weeks. Don’t forget PEC Planning Day is tomorrow (Thursday) at Mt Stromlo. This is one of the most significant dates in the School calendar.

Above, the two MCs for the HIAF 50th Gala, Dr Tom McGoram and Prof Nanda Dasgupta welcome guests, alumni and friends to a spectacular celebration of community. I will always marvel at the brilliant technical innovation which intersects academic excellent within this unique facility. The evening captured beautifully the energy of the community and is something the whole School can be very proud of. My thanks to Tom, Nanda and Alina Bryleva for arranging such a fabulous evening, enjoyed by all. I’ve included just a tiny selection of images below, with a more curated collection to follow. (image credits: Libera Arts Productions).

Your Heads will have been talking to you about the 2024 FRT and Jagadish scholars. They are excellent students and I strongly encourage EMCRs to consider supporting these short-stay research students. Please speak with you Heads asap.

See you at the PEC Planning Day!
Tim

HIAF Gala Dinner

The 50th anniversary of the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) was celebrated via a series of events since 15 August, with the Gala event being held last Thursday, 7 September. Almost 200 people gathered at the National Arboretum for the Gala Dinner to honour and celebrate this milestone. The event provided a unique opportunity to re-engage with the alumni and staff who have helped shape the facility. It was a great night with talks by Professor Chennupati Jagadish, in his capacity as the President of the Australian Academy of Science, and Mike Mores, Vice President of the National Electrostatics Corporations. Mike travelled all the way from the US to celebrate with us, and shared some interesting facts about the unique place HIAF holds amongst the 250+ accelerators the company has built during its almost 60 years of presence on the market. The panel was moderated by Questacon Director, Jo White, who reflected on the role of HIAF in inspiring science students and school teachers, and the transferrable skills learnt at HIAF which alumni apply in their careers outside academia. We had lots of fun and dancing, and as some people said, they look forward to celebrating the 60th anniversary of HIAF in 10 years time!

Josef Richmond who was awarded the Boswell Technologies HDR Award for Space Exploration, Moon and Mars, and Justin Hew who was awarded the Boswell Technologies Grant for Space Exploration, Moon and Mars!

This award and grant supports HDR as well as coursework and undergraduate students undertaking research in the areas of Space Exploration, Moon and Mars, and could be used towards travel, acquiring of equipment or collaboration activities.

Bunji Mentoring Scheme For HDR Students In Physics At ANU

When new HDR students arrive at our School they have a lot to take in, especially if they are new to Canberra or Australia. In order to help them settle in, we plan to instigate a Bunji* Mentoring program, whereby more experienced HDR students in the School are teamed up with new arrivals to help them get settled and to share some of their acquired wisdom as to how to navigate the School, the ANU and Canberra. How, when and how often you meet with your charge will be up to the pair of you, though we will organise regular events for Bunji and Mentors.

If you are interested in becoming a Bunji Mentor please email Physics HDR Student Admin. If you need more information then contact Vince Craig.
