Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Hope you had an enjoyable weekend. With the warmer weather we’ve had some curious visitors to the School. This echidna was found snuffling around the Cockcroft bike rack which I hope didn’t result in too many flat tires. (photo credit: Graeme Cornish).

May Day – This is the first reminder that May 1st is our annual School census date for PDRs, essential training and inductions. An important inclusion this year is that Tier 3 inductions will gradually become a critical element in maintaining your cardax access into hazard areas. Dr Rick Walsh (School WHS Manager) sent an email on Friday afternoon that gives directions to a new training status tool he’s developed. Please take a look, it gathers information from several ANU sources for your convenience.

On Thursday morning the School Executive will meet for the first time this year. If you have topics to raise please contact your representatives or Heads.

After an incident last year we are taking an additional step in laser safety signage. The WHS Team have produced the stickers (below) which are to be adhered on all table-top enclosures for your laser optics setups. Sticker can be obtained from the WHS Team, or from your Head of Department.

Have a good week,

WHS Training Plan

As part of the implementation of the University WHS Management System the School WHS Team have developed some tools to assist you in meeting the RSPhys WHS Training Plan.

These tools allow you to easily see which WHS training modules are relevant to your work. They also allow you to review your training completions and when you need to refresh any training.

You can find these tools on the Training page of the School’s WHS SharePoint.

PhB Mentors Needed

This year we have 9 first-year Physics students in the PhB program, some of the smartest high-school graduates from across the country.

Each student is to be assigned an academic mentor for their time at ANU, and we would like to make a call for people willing to take on this role.

This typically involves 1-2 meetings per semester to provide advice regarding their degree. All students should do research projects and also enter the Honours Program, so this is an excellent opportunity to expand your research groups with extra hands.

Please contact us to express your interest., and 'read more' for further details about the program.
