Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Many, many thanks to all those who helped to make Founder’s Day the great success that it was. The talks were truly spectacular and I heard wonderful praise for the speakers. I’m so pleased that the line-up now includes our undergraduate colleagues. Photos from the day can be found here and a copy of my presentation can be found here.

My thanks to A/Prof Vladimir Mangezeev for running the Founder’s Day Quiz.  For those who would like to see solutions to these fiendish questions, Vladimir will be running a tutorial in the Level 4 Meeting (New Building) at 12pm tomorrow (Tuesday).

As a prelude to Founder’s Day I had the pleasure of walking members of the combined Physics and Astronomy undergraduate societies through the new building the day before (see above on the terrace). Both societies are very active and I’m looking forward to engaging with them in broader School activities next year.

Also above, Professor Elena Ostrovskaya (QST) in her element as she introduces the Profs Hans Bachor and Tim Ralph at the launch of the 3rd edition of their book last Wednesday. It was wonderful to hear of the genesis of the book, its evolution and in particular the substantial community that it now represents. It was a lovely celebration with several generations of students attending. Hans pointed out that each edition has been responsive to emerging trends in quantum optics of the time and he mused about what trends that might prompt a 4th edition.

It is with huge gratitude that I thank Elena for her defining contribution to the role of Associate Director (Research). Elena has recently announced that she will not be seeking a second term in her role. Since November 2019, Elena has reinvigorated many of our signature research fora including School seminars, colloquia and ARC peer review all at a critical time when we all needed them most. I have never seen seminars and colloquia so well attended, a testament to Elena’s energy and mastery of remote and hybrid seminars. She has also seen a time when the role has considerably increased engagement with the College and beyond, working closely with the Associate Dean (Research), Prof Penny King (RSES). In our School, the AD(R) plays a critical leadership role and Elena has been exemplary in her insight and care for our research activities. I am enormously grateful for the contributions she has made. Please join me and thank her for all she has achieved. As we wind up for the year we will hold a School morning tea to thank Elena and many others.

Finally, look at the bottom of the page. Do you know what this is? The mystery will soon be solved.

Have a good week,
Tim

PS: …and don’t forget to RSVP for the WiP Gala.

Megavolts Episode 4 – The Search for Dark Matter

Episode 4 of Megavolts finds us in the HIAF experimental hall looking for dark matter with Dr Lindsey Bignell.   Actually, it’s a practice run, using neutrons instead: dark matter detections are likely to be so rare that we need to have the detectors well and truly tested before we begin live experiments.
