Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
A reminder that nominations for the 2026 Director's Awards close at 5pm this Friday 16th October. The awards will be presented at Founder's Day on Friday 23rd October and recognise outstanding research and service by individuals and teams. All members of the RSPhys community are eligible, including our Honorary Faculty, and teams can be made up of any combination of professional, teaching and research staff. There are five categories: a PhD Student Publication Award, an Early to Mid-Career Researcher Publication Award, an Individual Staff Award, a Team Award within Physics, and an award for teams outside Physics who have contributed to the School. Nominations need a citation of no more than 200 words (plus a copy of the paper for the two publication awards) and should be sent to ea.physics@anu.edu.au. Please do take a few minutes this week to put forward a colleague or team whose work deserves to be celebrated. Further details and previous recipients can be found here.
This week's research highlight comes from the Department of Fundamental and Theoretical Physics and is the main publication from Ellen McRae's PhD (which she recently submitted – congratulations Ellen!) Published in The European Physical Journal A with Prof Cedric Simenel, the paper "Skyrme-quark-meson-coupling energy density functional predictions for nuclear ground-state properties" develops a new energy density functional for describing nuclei, built on the Quark-Meson Coupling model, which connects nuclear behaviour to the underlying quark structure of nucleons. Ellen tested her functional through systematic mean-field calculations of ground-state properties across the nuclear chart. With only four free parameters, it performs comparably to standard nuclear functionals, which typically need around ten adjustable parameters. Congratulations to Ellen and Cedric. If you would like your own work featured as a future research highlight, submissions can be made here, or feel free to email me directly.
Finally, we have our October Physics Executive meeting on Tuesday morning (13th October). If there is anything you would like discussed, please feel free to reach out to your Head of Department, your representative or the School Manager. And a reminder that minutes from previous meetings can be found on the school intranet.

iLAuNCH ANU Space Health Team Seeking Volunteers
Would you like to support space health research?
Researchers from the iLAuNCH ANU Space Health team are seeking volunteers aged 18-55 to participate in a study supporting the development of next-generation wearable health monitoring technologies for space medicine.
Participants will complete a short cycling exercise while wearing non-invasive sensors that measure bio-signals such as heart rate, temperature, blood flow and movement. The session takes less than one hour and will be conducted in the Leonard Huxley building. Participants will receive a $20 Coffee LAB voucher as thanks for their time.
To learn more or register your interest, contact SpaceHealth.physics@anu.edu.au or complete the study sign-up form: Space Health Bio-signal Study Sign Up Form. Eligibility criteria apply. |
