Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
What a way to end last week! Friday's Socceroos watching event was a great reminder of what makes Physics at ANU such a great community. A huge thank you to Ash Pascale for suggesting the idea, and to Holly, Nikki, and Angus for making it happen. A special mention to our new member of the admin team Holly, who did a such a wonderful job with the decorations. Some photos from the day are included.
Registrations are now open for the Early Career Women in STEMM Grant and Paper Writing Workshop 2026, hosted by the University of Sydney. The school has sponsored the event and secured five places for eligible ANU Physics women researchers. If you are interested in attending, please register. More details, including eligibility and workshop schedule, can be found here. Please note that participants will need to have access to additional funds to support travel costs and three nights of accommodation.
This week's research highlight is a little different from our usual format. Prof Vince Craig and PhD student Noura Alzaidan from the Department of Materials Physics have written a piece for The Conversation explaining the science of nanobubbles, prompted by their use in treating an algal bloom at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool ahead of US Independence Day celebrations. The article attracted over a quarter of a million reads within its first 24 hours. Great work Vince and Noura!
I also wanted to flag InnovationACT which is now open for registrations. Running from 10 August to 3 September, it is open to students at all levels and takes participants through the full start-up journey, with up to $10,000 in seed funding on offer. More details and registration can be found here.
And to end with more good news, congratulations to Profs Hoe Tan and Lan Fu, who together with Prof Zetian Mi (University of Michigan) have been selected as recipients of the 2026 IEEE Photonics Society Engineering Achievement Award, recognised for pioneering and sustained contributions to semiconductor nanostructure-based optoelectronics. The award will be presented at the IEEE Photonics Conference in Denver in November.
