Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Above, Magician Craig MacLeod regards his handywork yesterday. He has been creating new mounts for some of our precious heritage, seen here a chandelier of drift tubes fabricated in the School by the talented technical staff in the Crompton Group from the 60’s to 80’s. These are destined for the display case in the new tea room. My hope is that we can start to display more of our instrumental achievements over the coming months.
My thanks to Dr Phil Dooley for highlighting another great publication, this time led by PhD student, Ivan Toftul (MP), posted on the School website.
I hope you feel the same pleasure as I do when I see an image of our colleagues representing this institution. The ANU has just released its latest three year Corporate Plan and distinguished images of Prof Nanda Dasgupta (HIA/NPAA) and Dr Ana Casas Ramos (MP) feature proudly. The plan is worth scanning though if you have a moment. It highlights important KPIs for the institution.
Below, action in the clean room: Dr Johannes Eichholz (CGA) and Deon Hickey (QST/CGA) star in a production to promote our world class optical coating facility. I will make this movie available when the final cut is done. They are currently in the process of producing LIGO quality coatings for a beam splitter being developed as a technology demonstrator the next generation interferometer.
A small safety reminder about slippery autumn leaves on paths.
My thanks to Dr Sam Legge (QST) for submitting the absolutely gorgeous sunset below. If you have taken a recent image you’d like to share, please send it in.
Have a great weekend, Tim |

3 Minute Thesis Competition 2025
Preparations have begun for this year’s Three Minute Thesis competition – the time when ANU’s PhDs are challenged to engage, entertain and inform you with the gist of their thesis in three short minutes (and not a second more!) supported by just a single PowerPoint slide.
3MT allows our PhDs to showcase not only the amazing research that we do here at ANU, but also to show off their research communication skills. To see a good 3MT presentation can be an incredibly informative, entertaining and even quite moving experience.
Training for the year begins with the launch/information session next Monday and the carries on through to the College heat on 1 July and ultimate Grand Final on 11 July. Students can attend the training without competing if they just want to brush up on their communication skills with the pressure of competition. With oral exams now very much ‘in the mix’, 3MT training has become much more relevant to our HDRs.
Please register here if you are interested. » read more
