Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is really a great pleasure to congratulate Distinguished Professor Yuri Kivshar (MP) on being awarded the 2025 ZIESS Research Award. This international award recognizes exceptional research in optics or photonics. The awards ceremony will take place on 10 July 2025 in the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

At the end of this month, the Focus PDR cycle is about to move into its second phase. Please reach out to your supervisors and promote a discussion about your agreed goals.

From snuffling monotremes to fearless dragons it’s always good to see local wildlife enjoying the campus. Until this year I haven’t seen Gippsland Water Dragons actually in the gardens around the School, so far from Sullivan’s Creek. This youngster was photographed just up from the SF6 storage tank. Something that makes me smile.

Have a good weekend,
Tim

They Found The Higgs Boson, But There Might Be Five More!

Anomalous results in particle physics experiments could be a hint to the existence of another five Higgs bosons, calculations have shown.

In the sixties Peter Higgs predicted the existence of a scalar particle of the Higgs field, and estimated it would be very heavy: it took decades for a particle collider with sufficient energy to be developed – the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – that could, by 2012, create a Higgs boson at the predicted mass of 126 GeV (about 200,000 times heavier than an electron).

Upnano Seminar - March 26

Date: Wed 26 March 2025
Time: 3-5pm
Location: Physics Auditorium

Upnano will present capabilities of 2-photon polymerization (2PP) for 3D printing. This technology has allowed researchers in recent years to create a variety of micron and submicron photopolymerized structures, as well as extend the capabilities for fabrication of micro-components as well as MEMS. In this seminar, UpNano will present highlight several recent case studies where a NanoOne 3D printer has been used to extend what is currently achievable in high-resolution manufacturing. If you are interested in printing small things, come and ask questions.

Chance Find Of Rare Atoms Could Reveal Big Surprises In Earth’s Past

As Dr Dominik Koll was investigating a new method of radio-dating ancient samples, he stumbled across evidence of a major event in the Earth’s history, around ten million years ago.

“It was completely unexpected. I was just dating an environmental archive with the radio isotope beryllium-10 and I didn’t expect anything exciting to happen,” said Dr Koll, who did the work as part of his PhD in the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications.

“I stumbled on an unexpected accumulation of beryllium-10 around ten million years ago; what caused it is unknown, but it may point to major events such as global shifts in ocean currents, or nearby astrophysical events.”

Dr Koll, who was a student jointly with Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), is lead author of a paper detailing the surprise, published in Nature Communications.
