In this talk, we will examine several fundamental assumptions underlying Darcy’s law and its multiphase extension, which serve as the basis for many contemporary macroscale simulations of flow in geologic porous media. We will then shift our focus from classical formulations to non-equilibrium models and flow instabilities, concluding with a discussion of a local upscaling approach that captures the multiscale nature of Darcy-scale flow formulations.
