Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
This week we thanked two outstanding colleagues, each for their own wonderful dedication to our teaching and research communities. It was lovely to see so many recognise Ms Siobhan Carson and Dist/Prof David McClelland at their special morning teas. Siobhan has been a central figure for our undergraduates and for our PEC team. We have indeed been fortunate to work with her over the past seven years and we wish her all the very best in her new role in the Australian Public Service. David handed the reins for CGA over to Prof Robert Ward last week. After almost four decades, David has been (and will continue to be) a tour de force in gravitational astrophysics. Some heartfelt words were contributed by colleagues, thanking Siobhan and David each for enriching our school in their own ways.
The Australia India Strategic Research Fund Round 16 call for applications is now open and the closing date is April 11th. A Q&A Session with Australian and Indian funding departments as an outreach activity to address scope, eligibility, and application process will be held on Wednesday 19th March, at 0945 to 1130 hrs (IST) & 1515 to 1700 hrs (Canberra time).
Also, a reminder that the Strategic Exploration of Research and Development is open to first stage contributions until April 11th. Departments may be a natural place to formulate commentary and feedback for this important process. I plan to make two short submissions on the importance of technical workshops, and the absence in the Australian context of an analogous entities like JPL, APL, etc. Happy to discuss these with anyone keen to contribute.
Finally, don’t forget the Focus (PDR) process is due soon.
Have a great weekend, Tim |

PhB Mentors Needed
This year we have 11 first-year students in the PhB program who selected Physics as their major preference. PhB students are the smartest school graduates from across the country.
Each student is to be assigned an academic mentor for their time at ANU, and we would like to make a call for people willing to take on this role.
This typically involves 1-2 meetings per year/semester to provide advice regarding the degrees. All students should do research projects and also enter the Honours Program, so this is an excellent opportunity to make an earlier selection and expand your research groups
Please contact us to express your interest, or for further details about the program.

Megavolts Episode 12: Testing Dark Matter Detector Purity
|
The challenge with detecting dark matter is that the signal will probably be incredibly small – perhaps only a couple of particles per day. So it would be really easy to be fooled by some other signal, such as lead-210, which is radioactive. » read more
