Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating Dr Michaela Froehlich (NPAA) on receiving the 2023 Environmental Chemistry Medal Award from the Analytical & Environmental Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. The award comes in recognition of more than ten year’s work developing methods for using trace level actinide radionuclides as environmental tracers, especially uranium-236 that dates from atomic tests in the nineteen-fifties. Details of her award lecture are here.

Above, the two winning memes from Founder’s Day. Thanks to all the entrants.

Last week, as part of the ACT Government team I spent three days at the biennial Indo-Pacific Defence conference in Sydney. I was joined by Prithvi Reddy and Mahasen Sooriyabandara from Thaum on the Physics stand (below). I used this opportunity to explore the sense of having a bigger presence at these events and I was pleasantly surprised by the interest generated at our tiny stand. Exhausting, but well worth it and the ACT team were fantastic to work with. I welcome any bright ideas of real items to showcase on future stands. An actual demo of a real quantum phenomena would be fantastic to draw people in. Happy to help fund a show-stopper demo, please reach out.

I can warmly encourage supervisors to attend graduation of their students, please register here. REGISTER FOR THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION

Have a good week,
Tim
