Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

This year’s 3MT competition kicked off last week when we were treated to four excellent presentations spanning the universe of activities in RSPhys. I appreciated the energy and enthusiasm brought by each of the presenters and ultimately the judges selected two winners;

1st place: Logan Davis (CGA) (also awarded the “Peoples Choice”)

2nd place: Ash Pascale (MP)

I’d like to thank the presenters (p), organisers (o) and judges (j) for making this a very enjoyable event. As mentioned last week, the School Executive will be putting a team together to raise awareness of homelessness. The team will be joining many others sleeping in the gardens of the National Museum of Australia on the 22nd June. If you would like to support this campaign please donate to the Physics@ANU team. We have an ambitious target and we need your help to offer support to those who find themselves without shelter.

It has been a great pleasure to work with Prof Patrick Kluth as AD(HDR) over the past three years. Sadly his term is coming to an end and I am calling for Expressions of interest in this vitally important role. If you have an interest please speak with Patrick and your Head. Three housekeeping items;

• The College is promoting a policy around travel to Sydney in order to reduce our carbon-footprint. Please see the new policy that recommends either bus or train travel to Sydney.
• Many PDRs are now overdue, please speak with your supervisor about refreshing your PDR.
• Finally, as of this year any increase in excess leave balances will financially impact on our annual allocation. Please speak to your supervisors about planning your leave as soon as possible.

The RSPhys Equity and Diversity committee will host a First Nations cultural training session on Thursday 15 June 10 am – 2 pm. The session will be hosted by Dave Widders, an Anaiwan man from Armidale NSW. The session is open to all RSPhys staff and students, but places are limited. Please register via the link below.

CoS & CHM 3MT Final - June 27

The College of Science and College of Health and Medicine are hosting a College 3MT Final on Tuesday 27 June @ 10.30am – also in the Physics Auditorium.

Any eligible RSPhys student is welcome to participate in the College 3MT Final, regardless of participation in the School 3MT.

There will be great monetary prizes available at the College final:

• 1st  prize $1000 
• Runner up $500 
• People’s choice-$250  

A light lunch will be served after the event.

Students wishing to present in the College 3MT Final should email science.enquiries@anu.edu.au to register interest and also register through Eventbrite.

Anyone wishing to attend as part of the audience is asked to also please register through Eventbrite.

Applications close for the Anne Kantor Young Women Environmentalists Fellowship on Friday 16th of June. 

The Anne Kantor Fellowships welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women of colour, non-binary people, trans women and those from regional or rural communities.

2023 ACT Emerging Scientist Of The Year Award - Nominations Now Open

Who are your up-and-coming scientists and innovators? Encourage them to submit a nomination for the 2023 ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year.

The ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year Award is open to mid-career scientists in the ACT who have completed their PhD within the past ten years. Individuals working in basic or applied research in any science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field, are invited to submit a nomination.

The recipient of this award will receive $30,000 (excluding GST), which can be used at their discretion. They will also serve as a science ambassador for the ACT, inspiring young individuals to pursue careers in science while showcasing the valuable contributions made by local scientists to the field of science and innovation.

2023 marks the 25th anniversary of EPJ journals. In keeping with the long-held EPJ tradition of supporting early career researchers, EPJ is making available a number of grants to support meetings for young researchers throughout 2023.

Falling Walls Lab Sydney 2023

Falling Walls Lab is an international forum for the next generation of early-career innovators, trailblazers, creators, and visionaries. Its aim is to promote exceptional ideas and connect promising scientists and entrepreneurs from all fields on a global level. Participants are given the opportunity to participate in a pitch competition and present their research, business model, or initiative to peers, a high-calibre jury, and the general public.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative seeks applications for three open funding opportunities:
