Dear Colleagues,

On Saturday, the Arboretum hosted the 2023 ACT Architecture Awards. The architects of our new building, Hassell Studios, won two distinctions; the Enrico Taglietti Award for Educational Architecture, and the Robert Foster Award for Light in Architecture. Above Mark Roehrs (top) and Mark Craig, receiving the awards. Congratulations to Hassell, and ANU in the reflected glory. Now, onto the Nationals awards in November.

My congratulation to Pavel Tonkaev (FTP), awarded a 2023 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics, or related field. Working with Professor Yuri Kivshar (Nonlinear Physics Centre), Pavel’s research interests include nonlinear physics and new nonlinear materials and is currently pursuing an experimental study of high harmonic generation enhancement and control by nonlinear metasurfaces.

I’m excited to announce that this year an executive Team from RSPhys will be joining the Vinnies Sleepout to help break the devastating cycle of homelessness, and we need your support. If you love gear (and I really do!) check out the new DMG MORI NTX3000 5-axis multi-tasker in the workshop. It’s the only one in Australia and set our workshop apart from others. My thanks to the then College General Manager, Jen Nott and our School Manager, James Irwin for securing the $1M to purchase this special tool. You will have seen/heard the extensive floor resurfacing required to accommodate the new Mori, my thanks to First Floors Commercial for their expert completion of this ever-evolving job. Nothing is simple in a 70 year-old building. A sequence below shows the precision ballet performed two weekends ago by Capital Rigging Service as they guided 24 tonne of equipment into position. My thanks to Mick Blacksell for coming in on the long weekend to oversee the flawless move of this equipment.

Meet the author - Alan Finkel
Former chief scientist Alan Finkel will be in conversation with Ken Baldwin on his new book 'Powering Up: Unleashing the Clean Energy Supply Chain', in which he shares his compelling insights and expertise and makes the case for Australia leading the way in the global transition to clean energy.

3D data processing is pioneering customised medicine for people with serious bone injuries.

A customised bone plate was implanted into a patient after a collaboration between ANU, Canberra Hospital and the M3D ARC training centre, helping to heal a decades-old injury to the patient’s thigh bone.

We are proud to announce the ANU Reconciliation Lecture 2023, in partnership with the University of Canberra, will be delivered by Professor Tom Calma AO, a Kungarakan Elder, a member of the Iwaidja people, 2023 Senior Australian of the Year and the Chancellor of the University of Canberra.

3MT is an international competition for higher degree research candidates to showcase their research. Candidates present to an audience on what their research is and why it is important in plain language for three minutes, with only a single PowerPoint slide! 3MT is a hugely popular and thoroughly enjoyable annual event and we encourage our students to have a go!

Students can compete in the School and the College 3MT rounds. The winners of the College round will progress to the ANU 3MT Final.

RSPhys 3MT round will be held on Thursday 8 June 2023 at 11am in the Physics Auditorium. 

Everyone is invited to attend to support the presenters! Prizes will be on offer for the winners.

2023 ACT Emerging Scientist Of The Year Award - Nominations Now Open

Who are your up-and-coming scientists and innovators? Encourage them to submit a nomination for the 2023 ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year.

The ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year Award is open to mid-career scientists in the ACT who have completed their PhD within the past ten years. Individuals working in basic or applied research in any science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field, are invited to submit a nomination.

The recipient of this award will receive $30,000 (excluding GST), which can be used at their discretion. They will also serve as a science ambassador for the ACT, inspiring young individuals to pursue careers in science while showcasing the valuable contributions made by local scientists to the field of science and innovation.

2023 marks the 25th anniversary of EPJ journals. In keeping with the long-held EPJ tradition of supporting early career researchers, EPJ is making available a number of grants to support meetings for young researchers throughout 2023.

Falling Walls Lab Sydney 2023

Falling Walls Lab is an international forum for the next generation of early-career innovators, trailblazers, creators, and visionaries. Its aim is to promote exceptional ideas and connect promising scientists and entrepreneurs from all fields on a global level. Participants are given the opportunity to participate in a pitch competition and present their research, business model, or initiative to peers, a high-calibre jury, and the general public.
