Biography

David began his career with DSTG as a Cadet Research Scientist, completing his PhD in 1994 in Applied Physics at the Australian National University. The title of his thesis was “Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering in a free piston shock tunnel”.

Since 1994 David has worked for DSTG on a range of projects which have crossed a variety of fields including: optical sensing, optical communications technology, acoustics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, quantum key distribution, quantum computing and quantum sensing.  David also worked at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland on a long-term attachment in the late 90’s.

In 2016 David was awarded a Chief Defence Scientist Fellowship to investigate development of compact atomic clocks and prospects for their synchronization using entanglement at the ANU.

In 2020 David took up a position as deputy leader for the Quantum Assured PNT Science, Technology and Research Shot.

In 2021 David took up a position as a Senior Research Specialist focusing on development of quantum memories, quantum networks and their applications.

Outreach

David works with the Science Mentors ACT program.  He has mentored students from year 9 to 12 on projects in quantum technology and radio astronomy.
