Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

A reminder that Physics Project Market Day is coming up soon on Thursday 24 September, from 11:30am to 2:00pm in B160. This year we are adding an alumni panel discussion on careers at 1:15pm, with four of our alumni joining us in the auditorium. The panel came about at the request of our students, who told us they would like more connection with our alumni to help them think through career pathways, so I would encourage students and early career colleagues in particular to come along. We also have a number of companies joining us this year, so there will be plenty to see and plenty of people worth talking to. And there is lunch. Thanks as always to A/Prof Cormac Corr for leading the organisation of this important School event.

Looking a little further ahead, another reminder that Founder's Day will be held on Friday 23 October, and the call for the Director's Awards will go out shortly. These awards are one of the nicer parts of the year, and they only work if people take the time to nominate. So it is worth starting to think now about colleagues, teams and students whose work deserves recognition, particularly the quieter contributions that keep the School running and often go unseen. Full details, including categories and the closing date, will follow in the coming week.

This week's research focus comes from Ash Pascale, a postdoc in the Department of Materials Physics working with Cormac Corr. Their new paper in Physical Review E reports a surprisingly slow instability, at around 100 Hz, in supersonic inductively coupled plasmas, well below the kHz to MHz range where such instabilities are normally found. Using a novel swirl gas injection scheme, the team produced two concentric, counter-propagating vortices that segment the flow field, and showed that intense plasma-gas heating within the inner vortex drives pressure fluctuations sets off a large-amplitude instability, which can then be damped or amplified by adjusting the injection conditions. You can read the paper here. Congratulations Ash and Cormac, and please do keep the submissions coming, either here or by emailing me directly.

And finally, the John Carver Seminar Series will be running on 18 Sept from 10am-1pm. It is our premier HDR student seminar event and a highlight of the School calendar, with prizes across several categories. Please attend and support our students.

Jodie

Have Your Say On Research Infrastructure

All members of the ANU community are encouraged to participate in a survey about your experiences and satisfaction with research infrastructure at ANU, including digital research infrastructure.

The survey is open until Monday 21 September, and takes an estimated 10-15 minutes to complete. Your views will inform University-wide planning and implementation of the ANU by 2030 strategy.

For queries and concerns, please contact the Research Infrastructure and Entities team at rie@anu.edu.au.

iLAuNCH ANU Space Health Team Seeking Volunteers

Would you like to support space health research?

Researchers from the iLAuNCH ANU Space Health team are seeking volunteers aged 18-55 to participate in a study supporting the development of next-generation wearable health monitoring technologies for space medicine.

Participants will complete a short cycling exercise while wearing non-invasive sensors that measure bio-signals such as heart rate, temperature, blood flow and movement. The session takes less than one hour and will be conducted in the Leonard Huxley building. Participants will receive a $20 Coffee LAB voucher as thanks for their time.

To learn more or register your interest, contact SpaceHealth.physics@anu.edu.au or complete the study sign-up form: Space Health Bio-signal Study Sign Up Form. Eligibility criteria apply.

ANU LGBTIQA+ Ally Training | Sep 14

LGBTIQA+ Ally Training is offered as part of the University's commitment to providing a diverse and inclusive campus where all people can safely work and study free of harassment or discrimination.

This 2 hour workshop will provide participants with knowledge and skills to create an inclusive culture for all LGBTIQA+ students and staff members and be an effective Ally within the ANU community.

After completing the training, participants can join the ANU LGBTIQA+ Ally Network. The Ally Network comprises a group of staff and students across campus committed to providing an inclusive and respectful environment for people who identify as LGBTIQA+. As part of the collective, members have access to training, events and networking opportunities throughout the year.
