Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you to everyone involved in our annual WHS audit, which was conducted on Friday. My thanks to Rick, James and Huma for the preparation and for shepherding the process on the day, and to Peter Linardakis, Sanjoy Nandi, Ash Pascale and Craig MacLeod, who volunteered to be interviewed. Early indications are that there are only a few small things to clarify, and the auditor was pleased with what they saw across the school.
Next Monday 17 August we have a Director's Colloquium from Dr Karelle Siellez of the University of Tasmania, who is giving the AIP's 2026 Marie Curie Lecture. Her talk is titled "Painting the Universe: A Visual and Musical Exploration of Space-Time". The colloquium is at 11am in the Physics Auditorium, preceded by morning tea at 10:30am, and all are welcome. She is also giving a free public lecture that evening in the same auditorium, with doors from 5:30pm and the lecture starting at 6pm, and I gather it sold out in Melbourne, so if friends and family might be interested please pass on the registration link. Registration is essential and there is a livestream option as well.
We are also hosting the Science Movie Festival, part of National Science Week here in Canberra, celebrating international scientific cooperation through film and discussion. It runs across three nights from 18 to 20 August, covering space, neuroscience and artificial intelligence, with panel discussions by experts each evening. The festival is brought to us by the Embassies of France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Italy, the Delegation of the European Union to Australia, and ANU. Registration (free!) is per night, so please indicate which evenings you would like to attend when you register here. It is a lovely opportunity to open our building to the wider Canberra community, and I would encourage people from across the school to come along. Apparently there will be good snacks!
A reminder that ANU Community Day is this coming Saturday 15 August, marking 80 years of the University, and everyone is welcome. There will be food trucks and activities for all ages – including holographic chocolate, quantum games and diamond colouring-in! If you register beforehand you go into the draw for a two-night stay at the newly restored University House including dinner for two, with dinner for two also going to three runners-up. Science Movie Festival
Embassies in Canberra are organising a Science Movie Festival during National Science Week to celebrate the importance of sharing and coordinating research across the world. Over three evenings on 18, 19, 20 August from 5pm to 8pm, films and documentaries related to major scientific themes will be screened. Each evening will also feature a panel discussion with experts on the evening's scientific theme. This event brings together the embassies of France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Italy, along with the European Union Delegation in Australia and the ANU. » read more

MSI Public Lecture | Aug 18
'On Rational And Irrational Numbers, Strings And Harmony'
Speaker: Uri Onn (ANU) | Musicians: John Mackey (Tenor Saxophone), Wayne Kelly (Piano) and Ben O'Loghlin (Double Bass)
This lecture aims at introducing the general audience to a beautiful relationship between maths, physics and music. We will explore the evolution of ideas that led to the equal temperament, the 12-note system which prevails in much music worldwide. The main characters in this story are the wave equation in a string and its pure solutions, which are given by waves with integral periods; the relations between them which are rational numbers; and finally, a twist in the plot where equal temperament is actually done with irrational numbers to achieve symmetry.
The lecture will be accompanied by live music.
