Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy — or is still enjoying — a well‑deserved break as we step into the new year. Whether you're already back at your desk or still making the most of the holidays, I hope you’re feeling refreshed and ready to tackle 2026. After a challenging 2025, with significant uncertainty across the University, we look forward to a productive, collegial and impactful year at RSPhys.

The first terrific news is of course that Jodie has been appointed to the role of Director of RSPhys for three years after serving as Interim Director for several months. I trust Jodie is recharging during the break and will come back energized to continue leading the School with distinction. Congratulations Jodie!

The publications are already rolling in and this week’s paper is led by Pavel Tonkaev with the title “Unconventional high-harmonic generation in resonant membrane metasurfaces” published in Nature Communications. In this work, Pavel and co-workers discover experimentally and then explain theoretically that highly resonant metasurfaces can break well-established “conventional laws” of non-linear optics formulated many years ago by Nobel Laureate Nicolas Bloembergen and team. This study provides novel insights into the transformative role of strong resonances in nonlinear optical processes.

Patrick
(Acting Director)

iiLab’s Next Big Upgrade Reverses The Polarity

One of Dr Who’s greatest techniques for solving difficult problems is to reverse the polarity. And now iiLab is trying it as well -opening up a world of new possibilities with their materials R&D.

The ANU Ion Implantation Lab’s (iiLab) low-energy implanter fires a beam of ions – until now negative - into materials to change their physical, chemical and electrical properties. These capabilities underpin work in quantum technologies, semiconductors, advanced materials research and more.
