Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
As we wind down for the summer break, I was thrilled to learn that Dr Shiyu Wei from EME has been awarded the 2025 J G Crawford Prize for her outstanding PhD thesis on "Indium Phosphide Nanowire Arrays for Gas Sensing Applications"—a wonderful recognition of the exceptional quality of her research. Well done to Shiyu and her supervisors from EME!
I was also excited to see the announcement this week that ANU Physics alumna Dr Victoria Coleman has been appointed as Australia's new Chief Metrologist! Victoria completed her PhD with EME in 2004 and is making history as the first woman to be appointed to this important role. It's wonderful to see our graduates making such significant contributions to Australian science, and I'm sure you join me in wishing Victoria every success in her new position.
I'm delighted to announce that Professor Hoe Tan will continue as Associate Director Infrastructure. Hoe has done an excellent job guiding the school through all the lab moves associated with the new building, and I'm very pleased to see him continuing in this important role.
With Professor John Close stepping down as Associate Director Research at the end of the year, I want to thank John for his dedicated work in the role and wish him all the best as he takes up his new position as Emeritus Professor in the school. I'm delighted to announce that the new Associate Director Research will be Professor Cedric Simenel—congratulations Cedric! As part of this transition, Cedric will be stepping down as Head of Department for Fundamental and Theoretical Physics, with an Expression of Interest for that position to be announced early in the new year. The Associate Director Translation role will also be announced in the new year.
I'd like to thank everyone for their hard work and support throughout 2025. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday break. The Event Horizon will also take a break and return on January 12th, 2026.
