Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
This past week Jodie was visiting Oak Ridge National Labs in Tennessee, USA to perform high pressure neutron scattering experiments. Jodie should be back on Tuesday, provided the US government shutdown doesn’t cause her flights to be delayed. My fingers are crossed!
I’d like to recognise and congratulate Dr Vikram Sharma the CEO of Quintessence Labs for receiving the Prime Ministers prize for Innovation. Quintessence, which developed out of the Quantum Optics Group, is developing quantum encryption solutions and is evidence of ANU’s role in establishing Australia as a leader in Quantum technologies.
The School hosted a number of visits during the week. Dr Tim Zerk led a delegation from the Science Division of the Department of Science Industry and Resources that toured Nuclear Physics and the ANFF facility (see photo above). I’d like to thank Prof Greg Lane and Dr Horst Punzmann for hosting tours of their facilities. Our visitors were truly impressed.
Inspectors from the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office and the International Atomic Energy Agency visited Nuclear Physics on Friday. Thanks to the RadInnovate team and in particular Prof Mahananda Dasgupta, A/Prof Steve Tims and Prof Greg Lane for hosting this visit.
On Friday we also had a full day WHS audit of the school, which included a site inspection of some areas of the school. I’d like to recognise the great work done by the WHS team (Dr Rick Walsh and Dr Huma Latif) and the School Manager, James Irwin, in developing the WHS systems that keep us safe every day and the professionalism they brought to the audit. I note here that we will have a Comcare WHS audit in December and ask that you all take this opportunity to assess your local work practices for safety and compliance. If you have any concerns please raise them with your HOD and/or the WHS team.
The University has commenced the process to appoint a permanent director of the school following the departure of Prof Tim Senden. Prof Ben Buchler is the liaison between the school and the Dean. If you have suggestions for external panel members to sit on the selection committee, or other questions related to the process, please talk to Ben or your HOD.
Wishing you all an enjoyable and productive week,
Vince Craig Acting Director |

IR Spectroscopy Workshop | Nov 21
An Introduction to Spectral Analysis and Tools This one-day workshop will provide an introduction to rapid, spectroscopic methods for identifying and characterising materials. It will focus on visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared light measurements of minerals and glasses found in rocks. Participants will learn about laboratory spectrometers, micro-spectroscopy (fast and high-resolution instruments), portable spectrometers, nano-scale spectroscopy, and HyLogger instruments for analysing drill core. Hands-on exercises will allow participants to test their skills at analysis, quantify light molecules in materials (e.g., OH and H2O) and learn about spectral analysis tools for modal mineralogy.
This workshop will be run jointly by Penny King (ANU) and Jessica Stromberg (CSIRO), Jon Huntington (Emeritus CSIRO) and is supported by AuScope.
When: Fri 21st Nov Register: https://www.auscope.org.au/auscope2025 (under 'Pre-conference Workshops') |

Wildfires And Threats In The Sights - Microfocussing System Set To Transform Infrared Detectors
|
|
Researchers have developed a highly sensitive method for detecting hotspots in the environment, such as bushfires or military threats, by harnessing the focussing power of meta-optical systems.
The key to the approach is innovative lens technology thinner than a human hair, which can collect and process infrared radiation from fires and other heat sources with much improved efficiency. Crucially it does not need cryogenic cooling, unlike current sensors.
The result is sensor technology that promises to enhance devices in both the civilian and military spheres, said Dr Tuomas Haggren, lead researcher on the project. » read more
