Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
What a wonderful start to the week with the official launch of RadInnovate on Tuesday. The new Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Radiation Innovation, which officially began operations this year, was formally launched by Professor Ute Roessner, CEO of the ARC. Our Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Rebekah Brown gave the welcome address. We were also privileged to have Tony Cook PSM, Secretary of the Australian Government Department of Education, speak at the event. RadInnovate represents a significant collaborative effort, led by ANU in partnership with researchers from the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide, along with twelve government and industry partners (including Quantum Brilliance started by RSPhys' researchers). It was a genuinely joyful occasion, and wonderful to see years of hard work come to fruition. Congratulations to Nanda and the entire team for bringing this important initiative to life!
The school also had the pleasure of hosting a very special group of visitors this week. Traditional Owners and Rangers from Kakadu National Park spent two days in our laboratories, working with Ludovic Rapp and Andrei Rode on an joint project with Penny King from RSES that uses lasers to clean and preserve traditional rock art. Thank you to Ludovic for capturing some lovely photos of the visit – it's always special when our research touches such important areas of Australia.
This week's featured publication comes from our quantum physics researchers with 'Fast mixed-species quantum logic gates for trapped-ion quantum networks' by Zain Mehdi, Varun D Vaidya, Isabelle Savill-Brown, Phoebe Grosser, Alexander K Ratcliffe, Haonan Liu, Simon A Haine, Joseph J Hope, and C Ricardo Viteri. This theoretical work, developed in collaboration with our industry partners at IonQ, has been accepted as a Letter in Physical Review A and is currently in press (arxiv:2412.07185). It's particularly exciting as this represents the first publication for PhD student Isabelle Savill-Brown and former Honours student Phoebe Grosser – congratulations to both on this significant milestone in their research careers!
I'm currently away from the School at Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducting high-pressure neutron scattering experiments with some collaborators here. My sincere thanks to Vince Craig for stepping in as Acting Director while I'm away. I'll be back in the office on November 11th.

IR Spectroscopy Workshop | Nov 21
An Introduction to Spectral Analysis and Tools This one-day workshop will provide an introduction to rapid, spectroscopic methods for identifying and characterising materials. It will focus on visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared light measurements of minerals and glasses found in rocks. Participants will learn about laboratory spectrometers, micro-spectroscopy (fast and high-resolution instruments), portable spectrometers, nano-scale spectroscopy, and HyLogger instruments for analysing drill core. Hands-on exercises will allow participants to test their skills at analysis, quantify light molecules in materials (e.g., OH and H2O) and learn about spectral analysis tools for modal mineralogy.
This workshop will be run jointly by Penny King (ANU) and Jessica Stromberg (CSIRO), Jon Huntington (Emeritus CSIRO) and is supported by AuScope.
When: Fri 21st Nov Register: https://www.auscope.org.au/auscope2025 (under 'Pre-conference Workshops') |

AIML-CEB 2025 | Dec 2
The Workshop on AI/ML in Computational and Experimental Biology (AIML-CEB 2025), to be held in conjunction with the Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AJCAI 2025).
The integration of artificial intelligence into computational and experimental biology is transforming how we predict, design, and optimize biological systems. This workshop will bring together leading researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and applied research to share the latest advances and applications at the intersection of machine learning and biology.
AIML-CEB is co-organized by CSIRO and the Australian National University. As a non-archival venue, the workshop welcomes the presentation of early ideas, works-in-progress, and drafts that can spark discussion and collaboration.
The workshop will be hosted at the Australian National University from 9am-12:30pm on the 2nd of December 2025. More details, including program and participation information, are available at: https://aiml-ceb.github.io/ |
