Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
The call for the Director's Awards for 2025 was sent out at the end of last week. This year, in addition to the Individual and Team awards, we have two new awards to recognise outstanding publications by a PhD student and an EMCR in the school. A committee will be selected to judge the nominations, which should be sent to the School Manager by 5pm on Monday 20 October.
This week's paper comes from The Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications on "Coulomb excitation of 124Te: Emerging collectivity and persisting seniority structure in the 6+1 level" just published in Physical Review C. The work was done as part of Martha Reece's Honours thesis which won the AIP TH Laby Medal in 2023. The experimental work was done at HIAF and featured a new auxiliary detector setup for the CAESAR array. Martha is now doing great things as a PhD student at GSI Germany. Congratulations to the whole team – wonderful to see such a nice publication come out of an honours project.
I met Danielle Neale last week who is the new (ish!) Head of Commercialisation & IP. She is keen to get to know people in the school and has let me know that her office has a position open for someone with expertise in the physical sciences and materials space. This might be an opportunity for someone in the school, or feel free to share with your networks.
Finally, a reminder that abstracts for ICONN 2026, Australia's largest biennial conference in nanoscience, are due by 17 October, so please get those submissions in soon.

Dark Matter Experiment SABRE South Welcomes New Equipment
|
|
Works are in full swing in the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, where researchers from Australian universities including the ANU build a direct dark matter experiment SABRE South. In the last two weeks, a clean tent has been constructed. It will be used to assure controlled, contaminant-free environment when assembling the dark matter detector. It will host a glovebox used by scientists handling the ultra-pure crystals at the heart of the experiment. These crystals are incredibly fragile and would start to degrade on contact with air.

AIML-CEB 2025 | Dec 2
The Workshop on AI/ML in Computational and Experimental Biology (AIML-CEB 2025), to be held in conjunction with the Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AJCAI 2025).
The integration of artificial intelligence into computational and experimental biology is transforming how we predict, design, and optimize biological systems. This workshop will bring together leading researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and applied research to share the latest advances and applications at the intersection of machine learning and biology.
AIML-CEB is co-organized by CSIRO and the Australian National University. As a non-archival venue, the workshop welcomes the presentation of early ideas, works-in-progress, and drafts that can spark discussion and collaboration.
The workshop will be hosted at the Australian National University from 9am-12:30pm on the 2nd of December 2025. More details, including program and participation information, are available at: https://aiml-ceb.github.io/ |

2026 CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics Application
Applications are open for the CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics.
Research in physics and mathematics is fundamental for Australia's future. The founders of this scholarship know that early experience in leading overseas laboratories greatly benefits graduates embarking on a research career.
The CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics was established to commemorate the scientific contributions of Drs. John Dunlop, Tony Farmer, Gerry Haddad and Don Price who died in a helicopter crash in March 2013.
The $6,000 travel scholarship helps post-graduate students visit and/or conduct research in an overseas or interstate institution such as a university or research establishment of international standing in the field of proposed research. The CSIRO are keen to keep awarding this scholarship each year.
Funding for the scholarship is made possible by the generosity of family, friends, CSIRO alumni and colleagues of Drs. John Dunlop, Gerry Haddad, Don Price and Tony Farmer. The Scholarship team also acknowledges the generous contributions from the Laboratories Credit Union and CSIRO. |
