Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
As you may know, voting has opened for a new council member in the council elections, and it's important academics participate to ensure strong candidates who will advocate for the ANU get elected.
The paper of the week comes from Dr Dirk König and collaborators, demonstrating that the 'Nanoscopic Electronic Structure Shift Induced by Anions at Surfaces' effect changes the electronic properties of nanoscale silicon without traditional doping - a breakthrough that could transform silicon chip performance. The work required several years and a whopping 1200 hours of synchrotron beamtime across several international facilities!
Our Momentum Innovation Space now has an online presence at https://physics.anu.edu.au/research/momentum/. Momentum provides a dynamic home for start-up companies with ties to the Research School of Physics, offering flexible arrangements and serving as a bridge between academic research and commercial success.
Mark your calendars - the ANU Quantum Open Day will be held on Saturday 29 November as a public event aimed at increasing awareness of quantum science and it's impacts, as part of the 2025 International Year of Quantum. The event will showcase ANU research in Quantum Light, Quantum Atoms, Quantum Materials, and (hopefully) Quantum Technology. It aims to encourage high school students to pursue careers in STEM, featuring talks in the auditorium, lab tours, and activities and displays in the foyer - thanks to Rose Ahlefeldt for stepping up to organise this event.
Finally, just a quick reminder for staff - the mid-year Focus Checkpoint step due date was 31 July 2025 and I just wanted to encourage everyone to log in and get it done. It's a good time to touch base as we rush towards the last quarter of the year!
