Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I know many of you will have questions following last week's announcement about the VC's resignation. Like you, I'm waiting to learn more about what lies ahead, particularly around the Renew ANU process. There is a university leadership meeting tomorrow (Tues) that I will attend so perhaps I will learn more then. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like to chat about any concerns you might have.
I'm delighted to feature our first publication spotlight. Dr Wei Wen Wong and a team from EME have published a new approach to fabricating metasurface lasers using InP nanosheets in Science Advances. Wei mentioned the idea came to him when he was writing a book chapter on light-emitting metasurfaces - he realized that InP nanosheets could be grown into pairs with broken in-plane symmetry – a favourite cavity design in the metasurface community – which had never been tried before. After some initial setbacks, the team tweaked the structure and achieved unexpectedly high lasing efficiencies due to optimal coupling between the cavity mode and the InP nanosheets. And all at room temperature. To bring these devices closer to real-world applications, they next plan to integrate electrical contacts to achieve lasing via electrical injection. Good luck team!
This week also marks the 10th anniversary of the first detection of gravitational waves, and I'm pleased to note that the CGA team has contributed a paper to Physical Review Letters in part to commemorate this milestone.
Congratulations to the organizing team for last week's Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium on Nuclear Physics and its Applications. It was wonderful to see over 100 participants, including strong international attendance, gathering in our School for what looked like an excellent meeting.
Finally, don't forget that Physics Project Market Day takes place this Thursday 18th September from 12pm to 2pm in the foyer of the new building (160). Poster boards can be set up from 11am, and all staff and students are welcome to attend.

Physics Project Market Day 2025
|
|
Physics Project Market Day will take place on Thursday 18th September from 12pm to 2pm in the foyer of the new building (160) – poster boards can be setup from 11am. The event is an opportunity to interact directly with undergraduate students by sharing/discussing your research and potential projects with them by presenting a poster.
What you need to do:
- On Thursday 18th September, bring a poster to the foyer from 11am onwards (get there early to have your choice of poster board) and interact with students from 12pm to 2pm.
A booklet for 2025 will be printed with all recently updated projects (Reminders to do this were sent out in June/July).
Contact Cormac Corr if you have any questions. |
