Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

To showcase the research in our School it's been suggested that we feature a publication in the Event Horizon each week. I think this is a wonderful idea so please send your hot-off-the-press publications to me via your Head of Department with one or two short sentences placing the work in context. Every publication represents so much hard work, and I look forward to hearing at least some of their stories.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Physics Education Centre planning day last Monday. We had excellent discussions about the future of physics education at ANU, particularly around our Masters programs. Thanks to the program convenors for their helpful summaries, and to Luda and Belinda for providing the data and organizing the catering.

It was fantastic to see MakerSpace featured in On Campus last week – congratulations to Rachael Hanrick and the whole team for such a positive story. Speaking of positive events, it was wonderful to welcome our new HDR students at the RSPhys HDR session on Friday, as part of HDR Induction week. The session included a presentation by our Associate Director HDR, Prof Vince Craig, along with introductions from WHS and our student representatives.

This week the School hosts the Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium on Fundamental and Applied Science (HIAS), which provides a forum for researchers to discuss the uses and development of heavy ion accelerators. This year's theme is 'Nuclear Physics and it's Applications.' I hope it's a great meeting.

Finally, amid all the recent headlines about ANU, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of what we're doing right – Physics at ANU remains number one in Australia, and we continue our excellence in research and education. I was concerned to hear that some students assumed they couldn't get equipment because of budget constraints. We have funding for essentials, and students, teaching, and early and mid-career staff remain our priorities. While we need to be mindful of spending, research income from external grants remains very strong.

Jodie

PS And I know this is said all the time but if you are feeling overwhelmed with everything going on please do reach out to someone for a chat – a fellow staff member, student, supervisor, HoD, etc, or consider using the Employee Assistance Program (EAP): 1800 808 374 (24/7). It’s free for all ANU staff and families. I know it has really helped some people so is worth a try.

Windows 10 End of Life

Time is running out to have all Windows 10 machines updated or replaced before the end of security updates.

We may not be able to help you if you leave it till the last minute as there will be too many machines for us to deal with.

Machines still on Windows 10 when updates stop will be booted from the network, so please reach out to it.physics@anu.edu.au ASAP to work through the solution for your machine.

New University Travel Training Sessions

- When booking travel for any type of University business, it is mandatory to use ATPI -

In response to the roll-out of the new travel approval and booking systems, a series of training sessions have been scheduled to support staff in navigating the new tools and updated travel policy and handbook.

Whether you’re a self-booker, travel arranger (organise travel for self + others), or delegate/approver, the training sessions are tailored to meet your specific needs.

Please 'read more' to register for a session.

After-hours Access To RSPhys

RSPhys standard operating hours are: 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

When providing swipe access to the school buildings and High-risk areas, by default you will only be provided access through the entrance doors between these hours.

If you require access to the building outside of the standard business hours, you will need to obtain authorisation from your supervisor using the 'School Office Work After-hours Safe Work Procedure'.

The completed form is then submitted to the School WHS Office - WHS.Physics@anu.edu.au

If you require access to labs after-hours, please discuss the work to be performed with the Lab Manager, they will be able to organise your access.

Tiny And Powerful – Metamaterial Lenses For Your Phones And Drones

A new approach to manufacturing multicolour lenses could inspire a new generation of tiny, cheap, and powerful optics for portable devices such as phones and drones.

The design uses layers of metamaterials to simultaneously focus a range of wavelengths from an unpolarised source and over a large diameter, overcoming a major limitation of metalenses, said the first author of the paper reporting the design, Mr Joshua Jordaan, from the Research School of Physics at the Australian National University and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS).
