Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

The Australian government's Strategic Examination of Research and Development report was released last month, and the first Issues Paper on National coordination for RD&I impact is now open for comment here. I encourage people to contribute (or engage through professional societies/groups). Research excellence is fundamental to our School's success, so we all have a vested interest in strengthening Australia's research ecosystem.

We are now in the mid-semester teaching break and a thank you very much to all who have contributed to our teaching efforts so far this semester. This week, our Associate Director Education, Ben Buchler, is running a focussed Physics Education Centre planning day with a focus on our Masters programs.

Don't forget September 25th is the date for the John Carver Seminars, our premier HDR student seminar event. This annual event celebrates the research being done by our HDR students. If you'd like to give a talk, please let the HDR team know by September 10th. There are great prizes on offer.

On an administrative note, as we all adjust to the new travel system, please make sure all travel requests include documentation justifying the travel. This can be as simple as a screenshot of the conference showing your talk, a letter of invitation, or just a PDF of the emails arranging a visit or meeting. Two tips - the files upload button looks like a text box, and if you want to upload more than one file, they all must be in the same folder (thanks to Hoe Tan who worked this out).

Thank you to Raghda Abdel Khaleq for arranging last week's Inclusive and Respectful Communities Workshop on "Understanding Harmful Behaviours & Responding to Distress." I know some people who would have liked to attend missed out and Huma Latif is keen to arrange another session in National Safe Work Month (Oct) to remind us that being both physically and mentally safe at work are both important priorities. As last Friday was Wear It Purple Day, I'd like to acknowledge the importance of programs like ANU Ally. I encourage everyone to consider the LGBTIQA+ Ally Training, the next session is this week (and its free)!

Finally, thanks to EME who have volunteered to be the department helping out with Founders Day (Oct 24th) this year. Much appreciated!

Jodie

Windows 10 End of Life

Time is running out to have all Windows 10 machines updated or replaced before the end of security updates.

We may not be able to help you if you leave it till the last minute as there will be too many machines for us to deal with.

Machines still on Windows 10 when updates stop will be booted from the network, so please reach out to it.physics@anu.edu.au ASAP to work through the solution for your machine.

New University Travel Training Sessions

- When booking travel for any type of University business, it is mandatory to use ATPI -

In response to the roll-out of the new travel approval and booking systems, a series of training sessions have been scheduled to support staff in navigating the new tools and updated travel policy and handbook.

Whether you’re a self-booker, travel arranger (organise travel for self + others), or delegate/approver, the training sessions are tailored to meet your specific needs.

Please 'read more' to register for a session.

Physics Project Market Day 2025

Dear Colleagues,

To enable our undergraduate students to have the opportunity to engage more with research conducted within the school, Physics Project Market Day will take place on Thursday 18th  September from 12pm to 2pm in the foyer of the new building (160) – poster boards can be setup from 11am. The event is an opportunity to interact directly with undergraduate students by sharing/discussing your research and potential projects with them by presenting a poster.

What you need to do:

  • By Monday 1st September, update your projects online so that they can be included in a booklet that is distributed to undergraduate students.

To update (or add) projects, follow the following steps:

    1. To edit your available student projects visit here
    2. Click the “Bump 2025” button for any projects you want to roll over
    3. Edit, delete or add any other projects

If you are a co-supervisor on any projects owned by someone else, please prompt them to update the project for inclusion in this year’s Project Day booklet.

  • By Friday 12th  September, if you would like to participate in this event, can you please sign up in the participant list

  • On Thursday 18th September, bring a poster to the foyer from 11am onwards (get there early to have your choice of poster board) and interact with students from 12pm to 2pm.

A booklet for 2025 will be printed with all recently updated projects (Reminders to do this were sent out in June/July).

Contact Cormac Corr if you have any questions.
