Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations to Professor Lan Fu on her election as Academician (Fellow) of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials. This recognition celebrates scientists and engineers who have made significant contributions, particularly disruptive innovations, to Material Science and Technology in the Asia-Pacific region. It's wonderful to see Lan receiving this well-deserved recognition.

This Tuesday, August 26th, the school is hosting an Inclusive and Respectful Communities Workshop (free to attend - pls register below). While I unfortunately can't attend this session, due to a teaching commitment, I'm keen to gauge interest and if there's demand, we'll certainly look at running it again.

A Physics Executive meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning this week. If you have items you'd like brought to the table, please send them through to your Head of Department ahead of time. And thank you to those who have expressed an interest in joining the Physics Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee. If anyone else would like to join please let me know before Thursday.

A reminder that staff need to update their projects and register for Physics Project Market Day by September 1st. Please don't let this deadline slip by- this event is an important part of our school calendar, and we need numbers for planning - plus it’s nice for the organisers to see that people are keen.

Finally, I'm pleased to announce that free coffee and tea (and milk) will be returning to the tearoom on level 2 of B160 this week. We are starting with just instant coffee and depending on feedback from the executive (and budget!), we may transition back to the espresso machine down the track. Let’s see how we go. This is all about bringing people together, so we ask that you enjoy your tea or coffee in the communal space rather than taking milk and supplies back to restock local areas.

Looking forward to seeing everyone around the tearoom soon.

Jodie

Physics Project Market Day 2025

Dear Colleagues,

To enable our undergraduate students to have the opportunity to engage more with research conducted within the school, Physics Project Market Day will take place on Thursday 18th  September from 12pm to 2pm in the foyer of the new building (160) – poster boards can be setup from 11am. The event is an opportunity to interact directly with undergraduate students by sharing/discussing your research and potential projects with them by presenting a poster.

What you need to do:

  • By Monday 1st September, update your projects online so that they can be included in a booklet that is distributed to undergraduate students.

To update (or add) projects, follow the following steps:

    1. To edit your available student projects visit here
    2. Click the “Bump 2025” button for any projects you want to roll over
    3. Edit, delete or add any other projects

If you are a co-supervisor on any projects owned by someone else, please prompt them to update the project for inclusion in this year’s Project Day booklet.

  • By Friday 12th  September, if you would like to participate in this event, can you please sign up in the participant list

  • On Thursday 18th September, bring a poster to the foyer from 11am onwards (get there early to have your choice of poster board) and interact with students from 12pm to 2pm.

A booklet for 2025 will be printed with all recently updated projects (Reminders to do this were sent out in June/July).

Contact Cormac Corr if you have any questions.
