Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Save the date! Founders Day 2025 will be held on Friday, October 24th. More details to follow, but mark your calendars now for what's always a lovely day to celebrate all things Physics ANU.
This Wednesday, August 20th at 10am, we're delighted to welcome Professor Mahmoud Mostafavi from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University for a Distinguished Lecture on "The Use of Artificial Intelligence Across Length Scales in Materials Modelling." If you would like to meet with Prof. Mostafavi please let me know.
Last Friday the school hosted our annual WHS audit with early reports suggesting it went very well. My thanks to our excellent WHS team of Rick and Huma, and to Shankar Dutt and Sam Legge who volunteered to be interviewed as part of the process. Safety is at the heart of everything we do in our labs and facilities, and it was great to see the commitment to best practice recognized throughout the school during the day.
Also, the school is looking to restart our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee - an important body that plays a vital role in promoting a culture where everyone feels respected, valued, and has equal opportunities to succeed. If you'd like to contribute, please let me know.
Finally, I'd like to draw your attention to the item from one of our student representatives regarding concerns about the impact of the Change Proposal 'Residential Experience Division' on students living at Graduate House and Toad Hall. I've provided my feedback here on behalf of our students, and I encourage others to consider doing the same. This affects approximately 20 students in physics.
Jodie

From Our HDR Reps...
A significant portion of HDR students, particularly international students, reside at Graduate House and Toad Hall, including several Physics students. Under the Renew ANU plan, these ANU-managed residences are proposed to be merged and transitioned into a hybrid model administered by UniLodge, similar to undergraduate housing.
Currently, these residences provide an exclusive and engaging community for HDR students, offering accessible academic and mental health support, and any changes should preserve their established character and HDR-focused nature. It is also important that contracts reflect the flexible nature of HDR timelines, accommodating non-traditional start and finish dates and extended research travel, and that the number of residential scholarship roles is not reduced, as these positions provide valuable supplementary income amid the growing gap between PhD stipends and the cost of living. The consultation process, open until Wednesday 12pm, welcomes feedback from staff and students (students can select “other” when responding), and supervisors are encouraged to contribute suggestions on behalf of their students.
Feedback can be provided for the proposal for the Residential Experience Division here. |

The event is an opportunity to interact directly with undergraduate students by sharing/discussing your research and potential projects with them by presenting a poster.
What you need to do:
- By Monday 1st September, update your projects online so that they can be included in a booklet that is distributed to undergraduate students.
To update (or add) projects, follow the following steps:
-
- To edit your available student projects visit here
