Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Physics Project Market Day will be held on Thursday, September 18th (Week 7). Academic staff – keep an eye out for an email about updating your projects and booking your poster board for this fantastic school event. Thanks to Associate Professor Cormac Corr for organizing what's always a highlight of our calendar!
Congratulations to Associate Director Education Prof. Ben Buchler and the entire Physics Education Centre team for what sounds like an outstanding AIP accreditation visit last week. Early reports suggest the committee was thoroughly impressed with both the quality of our students and our teaching programs. This kind of recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of so many across our school – well done to everyone involved.
Congratulations also to the team of the Heavy ion Accelerator Facility in the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications who are firing up the LINAC for the first run in several years. It's fantastic to see this important research facility operational again - a real testament to the expertise and dedication of the whole team. The experiments using the LINAC will investigate how new superheavy elements could best be created. (For those wondering what exactly the LINAC is, check out these videos)
Our new building continues to be a fantastic venue for bringing physics to the broader community. Last week we hosted the Marie Curie Public Lecture for the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, with over 120 people in attendance, followed by the launch of ACT National Science Week on Friday. Special thanks to Dr Sean Hodgman for delivering a fabulous talk on quantum science at the Science Week event and for his help organizing the Marie Curie lecture here in Canberra. It's wonderful to see our staff and school playing such an active role in science outreach.
Don't forget that abstracts for the AIP Summer Meeting close August 15th. The meeting will be held at the School of Physics, University of Wollongong and you might remember we had the pleasure of hosting this meeting here at ANU last time around. Also on the conference front, ANZCOP 2025 will be held at the University of Auckland from December 8th-11th, with submissions due August 25th. Details for both conferences can be found below.
Finally, for those interested in industry connections, there's an NSSN Sensing Industry Connect event this Monday, August 11th, from 6-8pm at Badger & Co featuring Prof. Tim Senden as a speaker.

Fellowship To Study Forgetful Fusion Physics
|
|
Congratulations to Dr Ed Simpson, who has been awarded a Future Fellowship to study nuclear fusion reactions.
Dr Simpson, who is from the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications, said fusion reactions are crucial in a wide range of areas, from astrophysics and material sciences through to medical applications such as cancer therapies.
“The vast majority of these nuclear applications rely on understanding low energy nuclear collisions, and Australia needs far great expertise in this area,” he said. » read more

'Using less simplicies to compute Vietoris-Rips persistent homology' Musashi Koyama, Australian National University
Persistent homology is a field of mathematics which seeks to understand the shape of space by keeping track of topological features over a filtration. Vietoris-Rips persistent homology is a frequently utilised type of persistent homology due to the ability to apply it to a wide variety of spaces. However, the large number of simplices used in the Vietoris-Rips filtration makes it difficult to apply it to the large datasets commonly seen in the greater scientific community. In this talk I will present a way to reduce the number of simplices used for computing Vietoris-Rips persistent homology. It will then be shown how one can further reduce the number of simplices used to compute Vietoris-Rips persistent homology.
Date: Fri 15 August 2025 Time: 11am-12pm Location: Boardroom 2.48, Hanna Neumann Bldg 145
