Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations to Joseph Hope, Simon Haine and their team for securing an ARC Linkage grant on 'Fast and Parallel Logic Gates for Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing'. This success is well deserved and we look forward to following the impact of the work.

Today marks the start of Semester 2 2025, and I want to extend a big thank you to all the staff who worked so hard to transition their learning management pages from Wattle to Canvas ready for this semester. I know this represented many, many hours of work at a time when we're all incredibly busy, and I'm proud of the effort everyone put in to ensure our students have the best possible learning experience. A special thanks to Ben Buchler, our Associate Director of Education, and Paul Francis who both were very generous with their time to support this transition.

Great to read about the work from Andrey Sukhorukov and his team on 'Tuning entanglement with an asymmetric metasurface' – a story that was picked up by the College from our Physics news site. It's wonderful when our fundamental research captures broader attention.

Just a reminder that the Oliphant Building Refurbishment project has officially started and is scheduled to take around nine months. This will allow Building 160 to be linked to the rest of the Physics South buildings at ground level and bring the Oliphant building up to modern building code standards. Please note that as this is now an active building site, there is no access to this area. Chris Kafer will be sending out more communications and details on this shortly, echoing the information that was shared with the school a few weeks ago.

And finally, it is with sadness that I share the news of the passing of Professor Rodney Baxter FRS FAA, who died peacefully at Clare Holland House yesterday. Professor Baxter was Head of the Department of Theoretical Physics before he retired in 2002. He was internationally known for his research into statistical mechanics and exactly solvable models with the Yang-Baxter equation bearing his name as testament to his contributions to the field. Memorial details will be shared at a later time.

Jodie
Interim Director

For the first few weeks, please contact me at jodie.bradby@anu.edu.au and use my Jodie.Bradby calendar. I'll remain in my current office (J4-14) during this initial transition period. While I have access to the director.physics@anu.edu.au email and calendar, we need time to sort out the meeting arrangements with Tim and others during the transition.

Share Your STEM Story With GEN-STEM Voices

Vaishnavi Muddam (Physics Honours student) has recently launched GEN-STEM: The Gender Equity Network in STEM, a new network amplifying underrepresented voices in STEM. It's first project, GEN-STEM Voices, invites students, researchers, and staff to share real stories and practical insights about STEM pathways, programs, and opportunities.

The goal is to build a resource bank to help students and early-career researchers find opportunities more easily, with honest peer perspectives all in one place.
