Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Firstly, congratulations to Dr Edward Simpson from the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications for securing a Future Fellowship. I was thrilled to hear the news firsthand from Ed just after it came out. These are incredibly competitive, and while we celebrate Ed's success, we also feel for colleagues who missed out this round.
Although it's been a quiet week with school holidays and conference season seeing many staff away, we are ramping up for Semester 2 starting next Monday, 21st July. Discussions are well underway on the change management proposal, with consultation open until Thursday 24 July 2025 (12.00pm AEST) via ANU renew. I know these conversations are happening across the school and I'm happy to chat with people.
The Expression of Interest for Head of Department for Materials Physics is now open, with applications due Tuesday 22nd June to the School Manager.
Finally, I learned at the College executive meeting that the Dean asks Directors to share news from their schools at the end of each meeting. So please share your achievements and interesting stories with me.
P.S. Everyone will be pleased to know Chris Kafer is back from holiday – though please go easy on him as he catches up!
Jodie Interim Director
For the first few weeks, please contact me at jodie.bradby@anu.edu.au and use my Jodie.Bradby calendar. I'll remain in my current office (J4-14) during this initial transition period. While I have access to the director.physics@anu.edu.au email and calendar, we need time to sort out the meeting arrangements with Tim and others during the transition. |

Twisted Light For The Future Smart Technologies
|
|
‘Chirality’—the property of spiral-like structures being associated to how your left and right hands mirror each other—introduced into nanostructures allows to create entirely new generations of smart nanodevices for signal processing and chiral biosensing. The team from the Department of Materials Physics realized a universal strategy for engineering chiral response of many resonant metasurfaces via the interplay of meta-atom geometry and lattice arrangements within all five possible planar Bravais symmetries. The project was driven by PhD student Mr. Ivan Toftul and Dr. Pavel Tonkaev (yes, he has been approved as “Dr” a few days ago), and the results have been published in Nature Communications, here. |
